Captain’s Cup Final

Posted on: 22 June

Last Sunday in atrocious conditions – cold, windy with skiffs of rain,  the final of the Captain’s Cup was played between John Anderson and Ben Martin.

John managed the conditions better in the first few holes and was 3 up after 3 holes. Ben was looking to make a comeback on the 11th with his second shot a metre from the hole and John’s ball was out of sight in the rough somewhere near the 12th tee. It was found to be embedded in thick grass. Ben was looking to win that hole but John made what he said was his best shot ever, to pitch over the bunker from a terrible lie and end up almost the same distance away as Ben. They halved that hole.

On the 16th John at 2 up, was much further out from the green than Ben but once again his amazing short game won out as he hit the hole  and the ball stopped  within 6 inches. Ben chipped on but missed his putt. John won the match 3/2.

This event has been a contest between these 2 players many times with Ben winning the cup for the last 5 years. Maybe it was John’s turn.
