Lonsdale Links Joins Great Golf Courses of Australia

Posted on: 7 February

In exciting news this week, it has been announced that Lonsdale Links has joined Great Golf Courses of Australia (GGCA) as one of Australia’s premier golfing adventures.

A partnership between Tourism Australia, state tourism bodies such as Visit Victoria and the golf industry, Great Golf Courses of Australia showcases the best of Australia’s golf product to international markets, leveraged through global trade, distribution, marketing and PR networks.

Described as a newly redeveloped golfing gem, Lonsdale Links offers a distinctive links experience nestled into the coastline of Victoria’s Geelong and Bellarine region.

Undergoing a complete course and clubhouse redevelopment by Ogilvy Cocking Mead (OCM Golf), Lonsdale Links reopened in 2020 – almost 100 years after the course’s initial inception. The refreshed layout has confirmed Lonsdale Links’ place as a top Australian golf course, ranking 37 in Golf Digest Australia’s top 100 courses in Australia in 2023.

Elizabeth Sattler, Director of Great Golf Courses of Australia is delighted to add Lonsdale Links to the portfolio, joining the Premier Tier.

“We are excited Lonsdale Links has joined the Great Golf Courses community. The first course to join the collective from the Bellarine region, Lonsdale’s inclusion provides us with a great opportunity to further promote Victoria’s exceptional regional golf offering.”

“As demand for Australia from international golfers increases, we have a great opportunity to showcase not only Victoria’s fine golf courses but to also highlight its exceptional coastlines, regional towns and culture.”

Josh Hall, General Manager of Lonsdale Links added, “Growth in golf tourism visitation is a key part of Lonsdale Links’ long-term strategy. So, it made complete sense to establish this relationship with GGCA to showcase the qualities of Lonsdale Links and the Bellarine Peninsula as a must-play golfing destination.”

The rich heritage of the club began when a group of Point Lonsdale residents decided to band together to develop a links golf course in the area. After purchasing a 43 acre property for £1000 they got to work and 18 months later, on November 18th 1922, the course officially opened under the name of Point Lonsdale Golf Links.

Now known as Lonsdale Links, the OCM Golf design provides a deliberate reference to the original layout resulting in a challenging, yet fun golfing experience.

In addition to the 18-hole championship golf course the property also features a golf shop, practice facilities and a 6-hole short course. The state-of-the-art, architecturally designed clubhouse serves lunch, dinner, coffee, drinks, and snacks for golfers and non-golfers alike, with uninterrupted views of Lake Victoria.

One of the eight Signature Experiences of Australia collectives, Great Golf Courses of Australia was developed to showcase Australia’s unique golf offer – including 9 courses in the world top 100 – to the international golf enthusiast. Comprising three tiers, Signature, Premier and Unique Golf Experiences, Great Golf Courses provides international representation for a broad range of products across the country and facilitates access to tee times and information for international trade.

With the support of Great Golf Courses of Australia, Lonsdale Links will be on the golfing map world-wide.
