Presidents Report – October

Posted on: 1 November

I seem to say it every month, but October was also busy.  The weather has not been kind to us with many of our golf days being affected and thus smaller fields.  The Barwon Valley ladies have increased our numbers while their course is unplayable.  It makes us appreciate how lucky we are to have our course.

However, we were lucky enough to have a perfect day for Amenities Day last week.  84 players, including guests, enjoyed the day.  Thank you to the men who manned the 15th hole and raised $154 towards our Amenities Day funds: Don Hanley, John Scott, Kevin Miller, Les Harrison, Geoff Dunn.

The raffle for Sean to play in his team and join him for lunch at Christmas breakup was drawn.  Leigh-Ann Johnson, Dot Orton, Barb Prussner were the lucky winners.  Knowing how disappointed Judy Collins would be Barb has generously given her place to Judy.  This raffle raised $128.

The trade tables raised $318, raffle $310 and string $148. So in total we made $1,580, a good result.

A big thank you to all the ladies that contributed to make this day a success: the sponsors, donors for the trade table and raffle hampers, also Sean, Judy, Marg and Merle.

Congratulations to Anne Shuttleworth on winning the quarterly medal on 15th October.  A Saturday player we rarely see Anne on Tuesdays, but she was able to be present at Amenities Day when acting captain, Kath, presented her with the medal.

40 plus ladies went on the golf trip to Creswick and although the weather was not great they still managed to enjoy themselves.  Thanks to the organizers – Wilma Crake, Marg Martin, Heather Peters and Lesley de Visser. Sandra Falls, on behalf of the golf trippers, made a thank you presentation to the organizers. Marg will organize the trip next year and is already investigating possible locations.  Heather will also assist.

Thank you Dot for doing the flowers this month.  I always know it is you when I see the brightly coloured poppies in the ladies room.

Earlier in the month Eva Russell organized the luncheon for four ladies celebrating their 80/90th birthdays. Past and present members joined them to celebrate and thank you Eva for making their day special and maintaining that link between the past and present members.

This month Sally Forsyth passed away aged 92.  She was a past Women’s Captain and always remained interested in the club.  She loved her Bridge and was able to play almost to the end, long after she had to give up her golf.

On Friday at Lonsdale we will play the committee from Queenscliff to challenge for the Jubilee Shield, which is currently held at Queenscliff.  The Jubilee Shield has been played each year since 1951, an endorsement of our close association over all these years.

Melbourne Cup today, so going up to the club for lunch to watch the race on the big screen and be part of the atmosphere.  Hope other members are also supporting this event and good luck to those that are in the sweeps and the Calcutta.

As the seasonal games come to an end on 15th November; Chook run Christmas break up 24th; Presentation afternoon 27th and Women’s Christmas break-up luncheon 29th November is going to be very busy also. But then in December the women’s sub-committee can have a break for a while.

We are looking forward to Entertain the Committee Day next Tuesday when we can sit back and just enjoy the day.  With Barb and Judy, last year’s committee retired members, organizing the day it should be fun!

Reminder nominations for next year’s women’s sub-committee close 11th November.  We already have a nomination for women’s vice president.  Nomination still required for women’s vice captain.

Helen Irwin

Women’s President.
