Norm Dalton Day – Report

Posted on: 7 June

On Saturday 3 June a 4BBB Stableford competition was held in memory of Norm Dalton.

He joined Lonsdale GC in the early eighties and sadly passed away in 1996 at only 51, having been a member for 14 years. In that time Norm was involved with junior golf and whilst on committee was instrumental in setting up the 150 metres posts.

Norm was an inclusive person, welcoming members and visitors to the club.

At the 9 hole BBQ nights Norm happily took his turn turning sausages and steak.

Heather, Norm’s partner, remembers his desire to get his name up in gold lettering. Apparently there were 2 occasions where he nearly made it but for a silly mistake and not knowing the rules.

Norm encouraged golfers to play in mixed events.

He, along with the pro at the time, James Hudson, organised mixed trips away to courses, mainly on the Murray River. These trips were known as The Log, as Norm used wood from this course on the trophies. He spent hours planning these golfing weekends and always came up with memorable dinner venues such as the Emmy Lou Paddleboat.

Our members were devastated on his death, and it was The Log players who instigated this day and it has now become a club event.

So when you next head up to the 15th tee, sit down on Norm’s seat and remember this man who was so highly regarded in our club.

Thank you to Rae Jacobsen for documenting Norm’s involvement in The Club and to Alan Hunter and Graham Buckland for adding their memories.

The winners of the event, fittingly, were Graham Buckland and Barrie Ure who both knew Norm well.
