New Members
Welcome Mitchell Charleston, Barry Walker and Alison Cornish. Please introduce yourself to these people and make them welcome.
Pennant
LGC can be very proud of the way our pennant players and their caddies represented our Club in the final of Division 2 at Barwon Valley on Sunday.
Their opponents were The Sands, who went through the season undefeated, so they encountered very stiff opposition.
The players began the day with a team breakfast, generously hosted by Richard and Donna Lewis. Richard as Pennant Manager always goes the extra mile to ensure everyone is informed and united in their approach.
A special thank you to Richard for all his work through the season.
The matches were very close all day and the players received a boost when after 8 holes they saw Bevan Cracknell and Dave Smith there to encourage them.
These two Life Members have supported the pennant players for many years and it was wonderful that they were able to attend, thanks to their chauffeurs, Barry Stewart and Tim Smith.
At the 16th hole the match was on a knife edge with every possibility from a 6/1 loss to a 4/3 win with 3 holes to play.
Bernie Crane had a win, Darren Shapter, Graeme Buckland and Zane Moylan had lost their matches but John Anderson and Ben Martin were each 1 up and Ian Warren was to go to the 19th. Unfortunately, John’s opponent put in a long birdie putt to halve that match, Ian lost the 19th and Ben won 1 up.
Sands were winners 4.5 / 2.5.
Congratulations to all players on a great team effort and to their caddies who supported them.
Captains Cup
Invitations have been sent to the 12 top qualifiers of the Club Championships plus 4 of the Captain’s choice. Please notify me by Wednesday 24 May of your availability. The draw will be posted on Saturday 27 May.
Juniors
The junior program is working well and we now have 20 players on the list. Not all can play each week but so far we have had from 10 to 15 juniors each week and it is wonderful to see their enthusiasm and improving skills. Andrew Adam and Rex Darcy and Ben Waterson have already been winners or runners up in the men’s C Grade Saturday competition. Congratulations Thank you to Sean for his coaching and his great newsletters. Thanks also to all the volunteers and parents who are supporting the program.
The raffle was drawn on Saturday 20 May. Thank you for your contribution $1000 was raised. Some of this money will be used to pay entry fees for the juniors to enter District Events. We have 4 interested in going to the Geelong Junior Championship in June.
The Junior program will take place each Saturday afternoon from 3.00 – 5.00pm.
All juniors are welcome to attend.
Slow Play and Bunkers
To ensure the field moves well PLEASE MAKE KEEP UP WITH THE GROUP AHEAD. It is very frustrating for those following if they are waiting on every hole.
During winter it would be helpful if more players started on the tenth tee so that all can be finished their rounds before dark. More even fields would also help with the speed of play.
Bunkers Please rake the bunker after use and leave rake in center of the bunker, parallel to the fairway.
Gold Letter Events
To encourage greater participation in Gold Letter Events, The Match Committee has moved that in 2018 if more than 8 players enter an event then a qualifying round will be played in the first week with 8 to qualify for match play.
This will shorten each event to one month and hopefully lead to more members entering the events.
X Golf
It is great to see the X golf facility on the move. With Leo McDonald champing at the bit while waiting for the permit to be approved, he is now working from daylight to dusk to ensure that all is ready for the frame to be assembled while he has a holiday overseas. When he returns, it will be all systems go so that the facility will be ready for use in October/November.
It is very exciting to have this new venture coming.
Thanks Leo for helping the Club with your amazing skills.
